questions & answers
What Do You Do and How do you do it?
I employ a six step process to organize anything - large or small. The only trick is to implement the steps fully, and to implement them in order.
I will organize for you, with you, or tell you how. (your choice). Generally, by the time people call me, if they could have completed their project themselves, they would have. So, they need my help. I generally function as a hands-on service to design a project plan and implement it.
How Long does it take? How often do you Come?
I prefer to work in at least four hour sessions (minimum of 6 if you are over an hours drive) in order to be most efficient. I can come every day until the project is completed, or once a month for as long as it takes. It all depends on your time and financial budgets.
How Much does it cost?
It is dependent on your time and how much you are able to accomplish in between our visits. Generally, once clients are less overwhelmed, they are able to assume responsibility for small projects, reducing the time I am with you and the cost.
How much am I required to do?
As much or as little as you want to do. Most of my clients are very busy people who employ me in the most efficient way possible. Clients will often work on other projects which complement the work I am doing, providing me with direction as needed. Other clients have me work independently. Still others work right along with me the whole time. It is up to you.
Is this a confidential service?
Absolutely. I never share any information about your identity or your project without your expressed permission. If I do, it is usually for reference purposes, and I will contact you for your permission and preferences ahead of time. Occasionally I will also communicate with a therapist, MD, or family member for specific reasons, and with your permission.
Will you please just do my ....?
I will provide maintenance services for any of our clients. Filing and paper management is the most requested service; I also will return every 3 - 6 months to restore order in heavily trafficked areas like play rooms. I will visit in January to update your filing system and get ready for tax preparation, too. I will complete an entire project while clients are away if that is their preference, as well. It's all up to you.
Why aren't there any pictures of real peoples' homes on your site?
The short answers are: There are some; I don't want to embarrass people or contribute to anyone's shame or guilt; I am not a photographer and don't want to pay one; and my clients live real lives in real homes - they don't live in stores, or magazines, or like Martha. So my clients are thrilled with their spaces and how they function - but the photos may not convey that story to someone with different priorities.
What about other people's belongings in my space?
We containerize them, label them, and date them. We can even photograph and email them (or send by phone). Then we work out an agreement regarding their preferences and yours. I never discard anything without expressed permission.
What do you do with the stuff I don't want any more?
My first preference is to repurpose items within your home, next we will see if anyone you know can use them. After that we will discuss specialty donation sites, drop off sites, and pick up services. When necessary, I will help you discard items in the most environmentally friendly manner possible. I will take one load of donation with me to the Goodwill drop off in my neighborhood. (you receive a receipt). I can also itemize donations for tax purposes, or help you get ready for or hold a yard sale, photograph to post on the web for resale, or recommend different resale options.
